Warren Elementary School raises funds for playground

BY MATT ALLEN matt.allen@sunmedia.ca Warren Elementary School held a silent goods and services auction May 14 to help raise money to be put towards a new playground. ?The playground structure we?re looking to put in is going to cost about $60,000,? principal Chris Gamble said. ?The reason for the auction is, we?ve done a bunch of smaller fundraisers, magazine sales, chocolate sales, vegetable sales, you name it, we?ve probably tried to sell it. The amount of work that was going into those sales was unequal to the profit. We thought we?d come up with a big idea, and our big idea was the auction.? The auction had 28 donations from the surrounding community to give away, with everything from 30 dozen perogies, fleece jackets to an all-inclusive guided fishing trip to Lockport. In order to be able to apply for grant money for projects like the playground, a sizeable amount of seed money is needed. ?They want to know you have what it takes to get the job done.? Gamble added. Gamble would like to see the completion of

the playground in three years, but pointed out that it all depends on the money. The community has been very, very gracious. We?ve had an unbelievable amount of support for this,? Gamble added. ?We raised $5,429, it was an incredible thing. Now our coffers are sitting at about $20,000, so we?re about a third of the way there. It would have taken us five years to raise that much with magazine and chocolate sales.? ?I would say that with what we?ve raised we will be able to apply for some of the grants that are available,? Gamble noted ?This money will give us an awful lot of leverage.?
