Inset: Joining them was Olympic speed skating medalist Cindy Klassen. The second leg was cancelled because of adverse weather conditions. BY CASSIDY DANKOCHIK The 25th anniversary edition of MS Biking to the Viking began Aug. 23 in Stonewall. Olympic speed skating star Cindy Klassen joined hundreds of cyclists at Veterans Memorial Sports Complex, as they left in the morning for the 80-kilometre trek to Gimli. The two-day cycling event is a fundraiser for the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society of Manitoba. According to manager of Marketing and communications Debra Fehr, The society splits its funds between programs and services for those living with MS, and research to finally beat MS. Fehr says the society is close to its fundraising goal of $500,000. ?Anyone who give us a last second donation to put us over the top would be appreciated,? she added. Fehr said communities along the route are helpful. ?Special thanks to people who wave encouragement from the road,? said Fehr. ?It makes a huge difference to our riders.? Biking to the Viking was to have returned to Stonewall Aug. 24, but adverse weather forced the second leg?s cancellation. ?The safety of our cyclists are our top priority,? MS Society President Donna Boyd said in a prepared statement. ?After consulting with route marshals, our expert cyclists with our bike shops, and finally the RCMP, we have determined that the road is not safe for cyclists and that we cannot ensure their safety given the weather conditions.? Boyd noted some cyclists are disappointed, on the whole the cancellation announcement was met with applause, even relief.
